A flat frame, a skin on top, and the drum is ready. Recent historical research suggests that this type of drum is possibly the most primitive of all. It was invented by women who used this design to clean grain and in doing so invented drumming.
This is also supported by the fact that frame drums can be found in almost every culture. They had plenty of time to spread.
